I’m excited to announce the release of one of my favorite translation projects to date, Vegan Japan, by Julia Boucachard. The book offers plant-based recipes for traditional Japanese dishes and street foods, stunning photography, and beautiful new illustrations for the English version.
Although she spent more of her childhood in the French countryside than in Tokyo, Julia grew up immersed in her mother’s Japanese culture and shared her love of traditional Japanese cuisine. The veggie-based dishes she enjoyed as a child made it easy to adopt a vegan diet as an adult, but she found that vegan options in restaurants were limited. Julia took matters into her own hands and began creating vegan versions of her mother’s traditional recipes. She opened the vegan restaurant Mori Café in Paris in 2020, showing the world that vegan food can be both delicious and gourmet. In her book, Julia explains how she created the flavor profile for each of these classic dishes and describes the ingredients as well as their typical packaging, which is convenient for those who aren’t familiar with Japanese products.
